What does it mean?
Facebook’s Codec Avatars project aims at creating lifelike avatars using 3D and VR/MR/AR technology to improve remote connection and communication. These avatars are designed to be very accurate copies of the real personas they represent, moving and gesturing exactly like them. This will mean we will be able to meet with someone far away as though they were in the same room with us. It will somehow improve and paradoxically humanize virtual connections.
So what?
If this technology gets widespread, it means virtual meetings and communication will improve considerably, facilitating even more flexible working arrangements. It will help us feel closer to those far from us. Apart from improving remote working across all industries, it will have a considerable impact on specific industries, like for example education, caring or why not, dating apps. The risk might be that as improve our remote communications, we set aside or reduce real, face to face interactions with others.
What’s next?
This technology brings considerable benefits, so we should adopt and try the technology and see how it goes. It is still in development phase, but it looks promising.
